Indian River County has had a documented problem related to mold and bacteria in four fire stations. Firefighters working in these stations have complained about exposure and the perceived negative health effects of mold for some time but their concerns have been largely ignored. In early 2015, nearly 70 firefighters filed first reports of injury to document exposure and raise good faith concerns related to potential health consequences. Every case filed thus far has been denied by the agency, but we were able to get independent site testing to confirm the existence of both mold and bacteria in the suspect stations. Now work is underway to establish a connection between the mold and bacteria these individuals were exposed to, and the physical conditions being complained about.

Two test cases are being litigated and significant constitutional issues are being outlined that could have a major impact on how occupational exposure and disease claims like cancer will be handled in the future. Watch for updates concerning this potentially groundbreaking case.
